Grade Level: 9th-12th

Instructor: Elizabeth Nikzad

Contact Information:  enikzad121@gmail.com

Course Description:

This course offers a foundational exploration of the field of psychology, focusing on the core principles that underpin our understanding of human thought, behavior, and experience. We will trace the historical development of psychology as a scientific discipline and delve into key areas of study, including the biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, human development across the lifespan, and the fundamental principles of learning. This course will be taught from a Christian perspective.

Course Content:

  • History of Psychology: We will explore the evolution of psychology from its philosophical roots to its emergence as a scientific field, examining key figures, influential schools of thought (e.g., structuralism, functionalism, behaviorism, cognitive psychology), and the development of research methods.
  • Biological Bases of Behavior: This section will examine the intricate relationship between biology and behavior. We will explore the structure and function of the nervous system, including the brain and its various regions, neurons and neurotransmitters, and the role of genetics in shaping behavior.
  • Sensation and Perception: How do we experience the world around us? This section will explore the processes by which we receive sensory information and interpret it to form perceptions. We will investigate the different sensory systems (e.g., vision, hearing, touch) and how they contribute to our understanding of the environment.
  • Developmental Psychology: This section will trace the remarkable journey of human development from infancy to old age. We will examine physical, cognitive, and social-emotional changes that occur across the lifespan, exploring major developmental theories and research findings.
  • Learning: How do we acquire new knowledge and skills? We will investigate fundamental learning principles, including classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and social learning theory. We will also explore the role of reinforcement, punishment, and other factors that influence learning.
