J.R.R. Tolkien: A Literary Journey

Course Description: Many are familiar with the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien, but how much more can be found when viewed through the Catholic lens? In this course, we will explore the deeper symbolism of the stories as well as analyze other literary elements such as theme, plot, character development, etc. This course will require at-home reading and assignments with discussion, group activities, and projects in the classroom. We will finish off the semester with a Hobbit party! Let’s explore beauty and the love of learning together!

• Sticky tabs or sticky notes - variety of colors
• The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
• The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
• Access to a printer

Teacher Qualifications: Theresa Spiers graduated from Franciscan University with a bachelor's degree in Education and a minor in Theology. For the past seven years, she has been a teacher and coach in Catholic schools where she has taught Religion, Social Studies, Reading, and Vocabulary. After getting married last year, she moved to the area from Delaware and welcomed her daughter into the world this spring. When she is not in the classroom, she enjoys spending time outside and staying active, especially playing volleyball and tennis.  She is excited to begin teaching at NCHS this fall!
