Math Concepts and Logic

Class Time:  11:10 - 12:10

Grade Level:  7th - 9th

Instructor:  Melanie Satterwhite

Contact Information: mssatt7@gmail.com

Course Description:  This is a supplemental math course, designed to lay the foundations for Algebra and Geometry to smooth the transition to these subjects.  It is valuable to take even if these subjects have already been taught, as it will help reinforce and solidify skills.  The course first reviews math facts and all essential math concepts up to pre-Algebra.  The students will create an interactive binder of material covered.  Topics covered include fractions/decimals/percent, positive and negative numbers, prime numbers, coordinate geometry, order of operations, area and perimeter and volume, exponents and experimenting with other number bases, evaluating algebraic expressions, math vocabulary, and symbols.  The course uses fun and engaging activities to help visualize math, aiding in mental math skills, and problem solving using real life scenarios.  Methods of learning include games, logic puzzles, patterns, analogies, problem solving, critical thinking, and art.

Tuition:  $300

Class Size:  6 - 20 students

Course Materials:  No textbook will be required for this course. All necessary reading materials will be provided as handouts throughout the semester.

·        1.5 inch 3 ring binder

·        5 binder tabs with pockets

·        Protractor, compass, ruler

·        Colored pencils

·        Other various materials may be needed for projects

Teacher Qualifications:  Melanie Satterwhite has a Masters in Operations Research from George Mason University.  While there she held a fellowship position teaching elementary math to underprivileged children in the area.  She has a Bachelor of Art, Three-Dimensional Forms, from the College of William and Mary with a minor in Mathematics.  She worked for 12 years as an Operations Research analyst for the Air Force.  She finally stopped working to be at home full-time with her four children whom she homeschools.  She is passionate about building a home and community full of faith, joy, good food, tea, reading, long walks, nature, creating beautiful things, learning, laughing, and embracing the crosses of life.  She helps run the F.I.A.T Homeschooling co-op and has taught various classes in art, crafts, P.E., and book clubs.  She is pretty terrible at correct English usage, but she is a master of making popcorn.  Melanie is a parishioner of Corpus Christi.
