Course Description: We will explore a variety of topics related to personal finance,
developing in students a basic understanding of finances, budgeting, investing,
savings, and debt. Topics will include:
Basic Economics (Supply and Demand, Consumer Spending, Inflation, Tariffs
and Trade)
The Stock Market
Employment (Wages, Benefits, Basic Employment Law)
Budgeting and Record Keeping
Taxes (State, Local, and Federal, Deductions and Credits, Capital Gains)
Investing (Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds, Tax Advantaged Accounts)
Credit and Debt
Insurance
Banking
Government Institutions and Regulators (The Fed, SEC, FTC)
Homework will include outside reading as assigned, research of various topics and
vocabulary as covered in class, and discussions at home about family finances (within
each family’s discretion)

Teacher Qualifications: Ron Fouse has been practicing law since 1991, primarily in a
corporate setting in the defense and national security arena, specializing in contracts,
business formation, financial reporting, mergers and acquisitions. Ron graduated from
Duke University with a degree in Political Science in 1988, then earned a JD from
Washington University (St. Louis) in 1991. He was an adjunct lecturer at the St. Louis
School of Law, teaching courses in business law and government contracts, prior to
relocating to northern Virginia. Ron and his wife Stephanie have 6 children, 2
grandchildren, and attend St. Catherine of Siena parish.
